Bird Portraits

Birds have always fascinated me. Their fragile but strong bodies, the societies they build, and the simple miracle of a body in flight. I think I paint birds often because of Emily Dickinson's words, and my stubborn refusal to abandon hope - that thing with feathers.

The majority of these birds are painted in oil. A few have some cold wax medium mixed in, and the Allen's Hummingbird below was my first foray into working with egg tempera. I'm currently working on more birds in that series.

If you are a birder, or bird-enthusiast, I would love to work with you on a commission to paint that all-important 100th, or 500th bird, or simply the one that holds meaning for you.
